What's going on... and I'm not wearing cycling shorts.

Got a fair bit happening inside my head and inside my studio, so I figured I could use this space to post some updates for those who are interested.

I’m sending a couple hundred dollars next week to the good folks at The Loveland Foundation thanks to your support for my long-form ode to dystopian noise drones called “Charts.” There’s no time limit on the charitable side of that effort, so whenever I get more money deposited from Bandcamp on that release, I’ll be sending it all to Loveland from time to time.

Deep in the woods on my first sample pack. One of my nicknames in school (usually thanks to bullies, if memory serves) was Holtergeist, and I’ve used that moniker for my audio work drive for years… so I’m thinking that’s a good name under which I can put some original samples and workparts out into the world for my fellow producer nerds. Having some inspired fun with this new effort and should be posting some teasers to the ‘gram in the coming weeks. Another project that ain’t for everyone, but making things and putting them into the world is part of the new lifeplan, so here we are. Early feedback from a few trusted ears has been real positive again, so that’s been encouraging.

Also collaborating with friends on some music borne of the explorations I’ve been doing for the aforementioned sample pack. Sending out files and hearing surprises come back my way has been super exciting and reinvigorating for me as I sit in this new city of mine, in a workspace that feels good but can certainly trend quite lonely... even for this introvert. I spent 20 years in Studio A at Wire & Vice in Milwaukee, and this new working arrangement of mine is filled with fresh energy… mostly good, but definitely some challenges. Tomorrow I have my first appointment with my therapist since we moved across the country, and that will help.

Albums are currently in the works for a few of the labels that I oversee at The License Lab, with new releases incoming from HypeKit, Eyeballs & Eardrums, UNDERscore, and Picture Puncture. Actually Organic Spark and Three Ingredients, too. And Supe Kitchen. Wow, lots of new production music coming… had to check my list here. Yowza.

Have recently mixed the first 6 batches of improvised music from my friends in Argopelter (Barry, Devin, and Chris of Field Report). Working on a unique plan to usher these inspired musical moments into the world. Very excited about this whole thing, truly. Details forthcoming.

I am still booked more than a few weeks out on mixing projects, but have some openings starting in October. If you’re interested in having me mix your record, I’d love to hear what you’re working on and talk ideas… email remains the best way to reach me.

Oh! Got our Washington driver’s licenses this week, and I got my bike (a Specialized that I bought when I lived in Los Angeles) tweaked up finally and am looking forward to casual cycling again. Casual. Nothing too sweaty. Definitely not “cyclist shorts” level or “jorts-plus-diaper” or whatever those things are. And the shoes? Come on. Just biking because it’s good to get out, my heart needs to get pumping each day according to my doctor and Kate, and I got a new helmet for free. So off we go.
